종교인이 자기 희생을 통해 고귀한 신념의 가치를 깨우쳐 준 증언록을 담고 있다. 오랜 세월 감옥에 갇혀 노예생활을 하다가 고국 프랑스로 탈출해 갤리선의 종군 신부가 된 사제 생 뱅상 드 폴의 생애를 극화했다. 뱅상은 갤리선에서 노를 젓게 된 불행한 사람들에 동정심을 느껴 새로운 교단인 '선교수도회'를 만든다. 그는 지금까지 무시 받아온 가난한 사람들에게 종교적 가르침과 위로를 베푼다. 뱅상 드 폴은 1737년 성인으로 인정 받는다. 프랑스는 제2차 세계대전 기간 중에 나치의 점령을 받아 정치, 사회, 도덕적으로 큰 상처를 받는다. 이런 분위기를 쇄신하고자 하는 의도속에서 제작된 영화는 개인적 영웅주의를 의도적으로 부각 시켜 당시 정신적 갈증을 느꼈던 프랑스인들에게 종교적 가치를 새삼 일깨웠다는 평가를 받아낸다.
