프랑소아(장 가뱅)는 자신의 아파트에 몸을 숨기고 경찰이 오기를 기다린다. 그는 치정에 얽혀 발랑탱이라는 남자를 살해한 상태다. 그는 어두운 방안에서 경찰차의 사이렌 소리가 가까워지자 과거에 사랑했었던 두 여자, 프랑소와즈와 클라라를 회상한다. 사악한 발랑탱은 그들의 마음을 사로잡아 프랑소아를 상심에 빠져들게 했던 것이다.
