멕시코의 산 앙헬에 살고 있는 마놀로와 호아킨은 단짝 친구이자 아름다운 소녀 마리아를 두고 은근히 경쟁하는 사이다. 다른 세상에서 이들을 지켜보던 ‘망각의 땅’의 신 쉬발바와 ‘기억의 땅’의 여신 라 카트리나는 누가 마리아와 결혼할지 내기를 걸고는 인간으로 변신하여 각자 지목한 소년들을 만난다. 그로부터 몇 년 뒤, 마놀로 는 투우사 가문의 전통 계승과 자신의 음악가 꿈 사이에서 갈등을 겪는다. 반면 아버지의 뒤를 이어 군인이 된 호아킨 은 수많은 훈장을 받으며 산 앙헬의 영웅으로 떠오른다. 스페인 유학에서 돌아온 마리아 는 마놀로에게 마음이 가지만, 그녀의 아버지는 호아킨만이 산적 차칼로부터 마을을 지켜줄 수 있다면서 딸의 결혼을 추진한다. 호아킨의 청혼 소식에 자극을 받은 마놀로는 마리아를 찾아가서 진심이 담긴 사랑 고백으로 그녀를 감동시킨다. 그런데 갑자기 머리가 둘 달린 뱀이 출몰하여 마리아를 물어버린다. 마리아가 죽었다고 생각한 마놀로는 그녀를 만나기 위해 저승에 존재하는 ‘기억의 땅’으로 향하는데...
